Photographs of Hokkaido, with the colour taken out and one square of blue put back.
Hokkaido Blue is a record of the island in black and white — and of the one thing in each frame that held me there.
On the blue
Hokkaido is mostly distance: long roads, low skies, snow that flattens everything to grey. In a place like that, attention is the rare thing.
So I take the colour out of each photograph and give back a single square of blue, over whatever made me stop — a figure on a far hill, a lamb among the flock, a ripple on the lake.
The square isn't decoration. It's the part of the picture I would point to if we were standing there together.
How I got here
I first came to Hokkaido in 2019, and it stayed with me: the distances, the quiet, and how completely the island changes from one season to the next.
After graduate school in Kyoto, I moved here, and now I spend my free days driving, hiking and fishing, with a camera along.
This isn't a travel guide. These are the places I've been, and the one thing in each of them I couldn't stop looking at.
